Bangor sisters behind tech-driven apparel brand KIJN on designing solutions for 'every day problems many people face'

  • Photo: Hailing from Bangor, Kelsey and Michelle Tracey started 'KIJN', born out of a personal journey

KIJN is a local tech-driven apparel brand created by two sisters from Bangor, which was recently announced as one of the finalists of INVENT 2024, the leading competition for aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs in Northern Ireland.

Organised by science and technology hub Catalyst with headline partner Bank of Ireland, the inspirational INVENT showcase is the main event of the year for early-stage startups and aspiring entrepreneurs to showcase their innovations to a panel of expert judges.

To reflect the different forms that innovation takes, this year’s INVENT has refreshed its awards into six new categories: Green Horizons, Living Well, Creative Leisure, BioBreakthroughs, Unchartered Ideas and Future Business.

From reimagining leisure experiences to exploring environmental solutions, each category has produced excellent finalists who have created a product or service that stand out and solves a real-world problem faced in these industries.

KIJN’s SmartFit leggings and tops, which offer sustainable leak protection for menstrual, urinary and breast leaks, are included in the nominations in the Creative Leisure category, with the winners set to be announced at the INVENT awards ceremony will be hosted at the ICC Waterfront in Belfast on Thursday 3 October.

Kelsey Tyson and Michelle Tyson talk to Sync NI to tell us all about their start-up business and how it feels to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award:

Tell us about your business, including how you come up with the concept and the journey of getting started.

We are KIJN, a business dedicated to revolutionising leak-proof apparel, starting with innovative products like leggings and boxer shorts designed for comfort, style, and functionality. The concept was born out of a desire to create solutions for everyday problems that many people face but are rarely discussed, such as accidental leaks during workouts or daily activities.

We were inspired by our own personal journeys and the lack of fashionable, reliable options on the market and set out to combine cutting-edge fabric technology with sleek, wearable designs.

The journey began with extensive research and development, focusing on materials that could offer superior absorption while maintaining breathability and durability. We have worked closely with textiles, and consumers to ensure our garments not only function effectively but also meet the aesthetic standards of our customers.

Have you always been interested in a career in STEM / technology?

Our interest in STEM technology has always been present, particularly in how innovation can enhance people's lives. The transition into creating a tech-driven apparel brand felt natural, as it allowed us to blend problem-solving with creativity.

Who was your biggest inspiration growing up and do you have a mentor figure in business currently?

Growing up, our biggest inspiration was  family, who always encouraged us to think outside the box and pursue our passions. Currently, we have a few mentors in the business world who guide us through the challenges of growing a start-up, providing valuable insights from their experiences.

How does it feel to have been announced as one of just 12 finalists for the entrepreneurial startup awards INVENT 2024?

Being named one of the 12 finalists for the INVENT 2024 entrepreneurial start-up awards is an incredible honour. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication that has gone into KIJN so far. It feels surreal to be recognised among such talented entrepreneurs and innovators.

What would it mean for your business to win on 3 October?

Winning on Thursday 3 October would be a huge milestone for our business. It would provide not only the validation that we are on the right path but also open doors to new opportunities for growth, partnerships, and visibility in the market. The recognition could accelerate our journey towards becoming a household name in functional fashion.

Going forward, what can you tell us about your plans or goals for your business - both short and long term.

Looking ahead, our short-term goal is to expand our product line, offering more variety in leak-proof garments while enhancing our existing designs. In the long term, we aim to become leaders in sustainable, functional apparel, exploring innovations in eco-friendly materials and expanding our reach internationally. We want to empower people to feel comfortable and confident in their clothing, no matter the situation.
