Tech firm Kainos is temporarily leasing its new Bankmore Square site to a social enterprise, which is launching a pop-up market with funds going to those in need.

Any rent Kainos receives from the enterprise will be donated to a local charity supporting those in food poverty.

Shoppers will be able to avail of street food and retail from local start-up vendors at the pop-up shipping container market in Belfast later this year, subject to planning approval.

The site was most recently home to the Dublin Road's historic cinema, and thus the temporary marketplace will be named ‘Box Office'.

The market will put an emphasis on sustainability, digital tech giant Kainos said, supporting small businesses and a commitment to ensuring a fair living wage is paid to all staff.

Kainos also said it remains committed to developing its new headquarters at Bankmore Square and is using this time to engage with staff and customers to develop a clearer understanding of its future office needs.

The homegrown firm's chief executive, Brendan Mooney said: “This support reflects our broader commitment to sustainability, ensuring that we have a positive impact on the environment, society and in our local communities."

Will Neill, founder of the social enterprise that will run the site, added he is "delighted" the company has agreed to lease the site at the ethical pop-up street food market.

"Belfast is such an exciting, up-and-coming city and having a space like this to showcase the very best of our start-up food and retail vendors will be fantastic for tourism and the local community," he added.
