Patricia McBride's 16-year recruitment journey has taken her from agencies to in-house roles before finding her home at Version 1, where she focuses on tech recruitment across the UK and Ireland. As a working mother who "stumbled into" the tech industry, Patricia brings a uniquely human approach to connecting talent with meaningful opportunities in an ever-evolving sector.
Now specializing in building teams across Version 1's Digital, Data & Cloud practice and Enterprise Applications, Patricia's passion extends beyond filling positions to genuinely supporting career growth and helping businesses scale thoughtfully. Her commitment to Version 1's values-driven culture and flexible working arrangements reflects her belief that great recruitment is about finding authentic matches between people and purpose. Patricia recently shared her insights with Sync NI about navigating tech recruitment, the industry's openness to diverse backgrounds, and why curiosity matters more than traditional qualifications.
What does a typical day look like?
Let’s just say no two days are ever the same — and that’s part of the fun.
My mornings usually kick off with a quick scan of emails and candidate applications. From there, it’s daily check-ins with hiring managers and a lot of time spent speaking with candidates — hearing what they’re looking for and helping them picture their future at Version 1.
Afternoons are for setting up interviews and giving feedback — and probably another Diet Coke. Life as a working mum means flexibility is absolutely key, and I’m grateful Version 1 really walks the talk when it comes to that.

Right now, I’m hiring across several exciting areas — including our growing Digital, Data & Cloud practice, our ASPIRE Global Services Centre, and supporting expansion within our Enterprise Applications Practice.
We’ve got big plans, amazing teams, and strong demand across both public and private sectors — it’s a fantastic time to be bringing in top tech talent.
What made you want to join Version 1?
Easy — the values. After 16 years in this industry, you learn to spot when a company actually lives its values versus just sticking them on a PowerPoint.
Version 1’s commitment to honesty, integrity, no ego, personal commitment — it felt genuine. And the Strength in Balance model? A big yes from me. It’s rare to find a company that truly balances customer focus, employee wellbeing, and business performance — and actually does it well.
Add in the focus on giving back, volunteering, and championing diversity in tech — and I knew I wanted to be part of it.
Did you always plan to work in tech?
Not at all! I kind of stumbled into it, and I’m glad I did. I started in recruitment more generally but found myself naturally drawn to the energy and constant evolution in the tech space. You never stop learning — which keeps me curious and on my toes.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Honestly, it’s the people — hands down. I love helping candidates find roles that really light them up, but just as much, I love working alongside such brilliant people here at Version 1.
There’s a real sense of teamwork and shared purpose, and that makes even the busiest days feel worthwhile. Everyone’s genuinely supportive, passionate about what they do, and just great to work with.
Plus, no two days are ever the same — which is perfect for me, because I’d get bored doing the same thing twice!
Any advice for someone thinking about moving into tech?
Go for it! Tech is one of the most open, fast-moving industries out there, and you don’t need a traditional background to get in. If you’re naturally curious, enjoy problem-solving, and are open to learning — there’s absolutely space for you in tech.
How do you see technology impacting our lives?
It’s already changing how we live, work, shop, and communicate. The rise of AI, cloud, and data-driven solutions is opening doors to smarter, more personalised, and efficient ways of doing things — and when used ethically, the positive impact is huge.
Who inspired you in your career?
I’ve worked with some inspirational mentors over the years — people who’ve led with integrity, patience, and a genuine care for people. Those are the kinds of leaders that leave a mark and shape how you show up for others.
Most exciting tech development recently?
I’d have to say generative AI and machine learning — especially in recruitment. It’s completely changing how we approach sourcing and hiring strategies. And it’s still early days — the potential is huge (and yes, slightly scary!).
Tech gadget you can’t live without?
Definitely my phone. It’s my everything-in-one — mobile office, calendar and camera.
But outside of work? It usually gets “borrowed” by my daughter so she can make TikTok videos with her friends. So really, it's less my phone and more of a shared device at this point!
And finally… any fun facts about life outside of work?
Most weekends, you’ll find me at the zoo with my daughter — it’s basically our second home. I might be slightly addicted (and no, I don’t have a favourite animal… but the penguins are ridiculously cute).
Being a working mum in tech recruitment can be a bit of a juggling act — but thanks to a supportive team and flexible working, I get to do work I love and still be there for the little moments (and the not-so-little tantrums) at home.
