Tech Trailblazers

Tech Trailblazer: Lauren Vallely, Software Engineer II, Apex

  • Lauren Vallely's path into technology began with a simple fascination for programming logic during her school years. Now working as a Software Engineer II at Apex Fintech Solutions, she has built a successful career by following her curiosity and embracing the challenges that come with solving complex problems through code.

Have you always had an interest in technology, and was there a specific person or particular event that led you into your current role?

After completing my ICT GCSE, I found myself fascinated by the logic and the concept of programming, so I took Software Systems Development at A-level to challenge myself further. That’s where the spark lit. I loved solving problems and seeing code come to life. From there, I just kept chasing that ‘programming high,’ which has shaped my journey into the role I’m in today.

What would you consider to be the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of your job?

The variety. I get to work on a wide range of products and collaborate with so many kinds of people, which keeps things exciting. But honestly, there’s nothing quite like seeing something you builtbeing used by real people. I recently gave a talk on one of my projects and sharing that journey with others was incredibly rewarding.

In terms of career development, how important is it to build a professional network and attend industry events?

Despite thoroughly enjoying working with my team, it’s incredibly valuable to connect with others outside of your immediate circle to bounce ideas off, share experiences, and even vent when needed. These interactions help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, feel understood, and discover new ways to challenge and push yourself further. For instance, I recently attended the Women Techmakers event, where I gained insights ranging from better strategies to secure my data to practical tips on navigating difficult conversations with a manager. Such opportunities are both inspiring and empowering.

How much impact can a mentor have on your personal development?

A mentor can have an enormous impact. Particularly as a woman in tech, having someone in your corner who believes in you, advocates for your growth, and supports your journey can make all the difference. A good mentor not only encourages you to reach for opportunities you might have hesitated to pursue but also helps keep you grounded. They provide invaluable reassurance and remind you that you absolutely deserve to be where you are. Their guidance and belief in you can be a game-changer for your career.

What guidance would you offer to any young person on why they should consider a career in technology?

Tech isn’t onesizefitsall. There are so many paths you can explore, whether you’re into creativity, logic, people, or innovation. Try things out, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to take a different route. You might be surprised where you end up. I went down the apprenticeship route and have never looked back.

What advice would you give to women considering a career change or return to work but are daunted by the prospect of working in what can be perceived as a male-dominated industry?

Go for it. Yes, it can feel intimidating, but there is absolutely space for you in the industry. The tech world is constantly evolving, and there are many incredible women in tech communities ready to support you, share resources, and cheer you on every step of the way. Remember, you’re not doing this alone. While people in tech can seem intimidating at times, many are incredibly kind and supportive. Don’t hold yourself back or hesitate to push your boundaries because of fear of what others might think. You’ll never know what amazing things you’re capable of unless you challenge yourself and take that leap.

For those who may not come from a STEM background, what other career opportunities exist within the tech sector beyond software engineering?

Software engineering is just one part of the puzzle. Tech needs storytellers, strategists, designers, analyst, it takes a lot to complete the puzzle. Roles like product management, UX design, tech writing, and customer success all play a massive role in shaping the products we build.
