Tech Trailblazers

Tech Trailblazer: Sevvy Yousef, Software Engineer, Rapid 7

  • Sevvy Yusuf is a Software Engineer at Rapid7.

Here, Sevvy sits down with Sync NI to take part in the Tech Trailblazer challenge, discussing her pathway into a career in tech, what a day in her life looks like, and why Rapid7 is a great company to foster growth and develop talent.

Have you always had an interest in technology, and was there a specific person or particular event that led you into your current role?

I was a latecomer to the tech industry. I studied Mathematics in university and I was briefly introduced to programming during one of my modules. I loved the logical aspect to it and it quickly became my favourite module. After graduating I felt a little at a loss as to what I wanted to do, so following a consultation with a career’s advisor I decided to return to university and complete a MSc conversion course in Software Development.

One of the earliest influences on my career path was my programming lecturer during my master’s degree. His clear passion for teaching further fuelled my interest and helped solidify that this would be something that I would enjoy doing long term. Since thenI’ve had mentors at work who constantly inspire me and help me grow within my role.

What would you consider to be the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of your job?

For me personally it’s the collaboration and team culture. I’m very lucky to be part of a team made up of very smart and driven individuals, who are also incredibly supportive of each other and all round good people. As cliche as it sounds, I also love the kick you get from finally cracking a tough problem. That moment when everything clicks is hard to beat.

In terms of career development, how important is it to build a professional network and attend industry events?

Building a professional network is incredibly important. Aside from the obvious - staying up to date in the constantly evolving world of tech - it’s also a great way to build your confidence, increase your visibility, and find people who might have shared a similar path to you that you can learn from. As we progress in our careers and build on our experience, it’s equally important to give back to the community and be that mentor for someone. Especially for people of diverse backgrounds who can provide the representation to make everyone feel included. Industry events are probably one of the best environments for getting out there and meeting new people.

How much impact can a mentor have on your personal development?

The impact a mentor can have on your personal development really depends on the person and the dynamic of the mentorship. Finding the right communication style can help you build on your strengths and help target your growth areas. They can help you reflect and stay accountable. Mentors don’t only bring knowledge, but they bring invaluable experience that you can learn from.

What guidance would you offer to any young person on why they should consider a career in technology?

There are endless opportunities in technology, you can really carve out the right path for you and have a fulfilling career where no two days are the same.

What advice would you give to women considering a career change or return to work but are daunted by the prospect of working in what can be perceived as a male dominated industry?

It’s ok to feel nervous, but do it anyway. Women belong in these spaces just as much as anyone and your voice and experience is just as important.

For those who may not come from a STEM background, what other career opportunities exist within the tech sector beyond software engineering?

The tech sector offers a wide range of careers beyond software engineering, such as product and project management, UI/UX design, customer success, etc. There really is something for everyone.
