Recognising potential for advanced analytics in the audit world

  • - Written by the team at PwC

After graduating from Cardiff University in 2017, Jasmin chose to stay in South Wales and start her career in the Cardiff office.

Originally from Birmingham, she’d grown fond of the local scenery and beaches on her doorstep and continues to embrace an outdoor lifestyle to this day.

Jasmin initially joined our Data Analytics team in Cardiff, but in 2020 had the opportunity to join a newly formed Digital Audit Advanced Analytics team.

She’s now responsible for helping create bespoke solutions for our Audit teams which combine the use of technology and analytics. All contributing towards a more efficient and thorough audit.

So why did Jasmin look to make the move to Digital Audit?

“I liked the idea that it would allow me to work with a variety of different audit teams that may be experiencing similar struggles within their audits. I could then provide solutions which could potentially optimise or help automate processes.

"The hands-on nature of Digital Audit is perfect for me as I’m able to use my technical skills to fully immerse myself into a solution. Plus I still get to maintain aspects of project management and communication with audit teams and clients on the job.”

RELATED: Using my creativity to be at the forefront of technology

Outside of work, Jasmin’s recently started to learn Spanish and one day hopes to work or live in Spain for a few months. Everyday flexibility at PwC means Jasmin can attend her language classes every week, enabling a healthy work life balance.

“Being able to structure my working day in a way that suits me and allows me to work at maximum productivity levels is something that I’m grateful for because I know that this is something that isn’t offered by many other companies.”

So what does Jasmin predict for the future of Digital Audit with the technology she has witnessed?

“Audit has already been hugely enhanced by technologies and this will only increase in the coming years. There’s a benefit of being able to use data effectively in an audit to provide an increased level of comfort and uncover insights that have not been looked at before. We’ll be empowered to explore the possibilities of technology ourselves and how it can be used successfully with clients. In turn creating a forward-thinking Audit practice.”

It’s this personal autonomy and ownership that Jasmin recognises has helped push her own learning and development. Many of the teams she’s worked with internally and externally have required her to adapt her own communication style and delivery. A skill she hadn’t had to develop beforehand.

RELATED: Providing international client support from the South West

“My biggest surprise about a career at PwC is how willing people are to offer support and help if you need it. I think the general impression of many professional firms is that there’s little guidance and support given to employees but I’ve found PwC to be quite the opposite.”

She’d describe her PwC journey so far as valuable, flexible and progressive.

Any parting comments for those interested in a career within Technology?

“When I first started at PwC I was pleasantly surprised that a career in Technology is about much more than coding and data. It’s about being encouraged to develop in all aspects of your career such as creating relationships with clients and innovation.

"Technology at PwC is a great place to be - you’re at the forefront of how it's being used with hands-on solutions and idea generation. You’re encouraged to share your opinions too, no matter your grade or experience you have. Every idea started somewhere.”
