Lurgan Shared Education Program takes to the stage of global GIS conference

Discover the Shared Education Program that brought together students from a Catholic and Protestant background, to map and analyse their sentiment as they traveled through their divided community.
The Lurgan Shared Education project mapped and analysed sectarian divisions in the community, identifying several locations that some students either never visited or in which they felt uncomfortable and unsafe.
Students recorded and analysed the data using Esri’s digital mapping platform ArcGIS. The findings were also shared with the PSNI, local government representatives and community organisations.
Three students, three teachers and a member of the PSNI travelled to San Diego for 2019 Esri International User Conference – the world’s largest GIS conference that brings together 19,000 users, experts, scientists, educators and decision makers from 128 countries.
This amazing GIS story has enabled barriers to be broken down and new friendships to be formed. This is how change begins. Join the students of Lurgan to learn how youth are using GIS to make a difference in their community.
