Four NI utility firms team up to prepare for Winter weather

  • Four of Northern Ireland's utility companies have teamed up to work together this winter to ensure homes are supplied winter despite any weather.

Northern Ireland's electricity, water, broadband, and gas providers make special preparations every winter to ensure that adverse weather doesn't disrupt supply. A particularly cold snap can lead to burst water pipes, for example, and the increased heating needed in homes can be a problem for boilers that haven't been recently serviced.

NIE Networks, Northern Ireland Water, Openreach, and Phoenix Natural Gas have now announced that they are joining forces for the ninth year in the row to help ensure properties across Northern Ireland are ready for potential winter disurption. The four companies are working on a shared initiative to share advice and guidance on preparing for adverse weather.

Mairead Meyer, Director of Openreach in Northern Ireland and Chair of the Joint Utilities Working Group said: "As we all know the winter season in Northern Ireland can bring unpredictable weather and this can impact on the services we provide to home and property owners right across the region."

"In the coming weeks all four companies will be issuing helpful information on our social media channels and websites as well as through other media channels like local papers to make sure that people know what to do and who to contact if any problems arise at their property."

The group has been training new people throughout the year despite the pandemic, and now has a combined total of 3,400 engineers who have been granted keyworker status and will be working throughout the winter months. The group has asked that people pay special attention this year to any vulnerable or elderly neighbours who may be alone this winter, and report any faults they see to the contacts below:
