Local sports tech start-up secures investment in connected ski pass system

  • NI sports tech start-up Maintain Technologies Ltd has secured investment from the Halo Business Angel Network (HBAN)

The tourism industry around the world is still suffering from radically reduced footfall over the past six months, but many sports have already adapted and re-opened in a safe manner and others are taking the opportunity to invest in new safety technology.

Northern Irish sports tech start-up Mountain Technologies Ltd has announced that it's just secured significant investment from HBAN angel investors to market and launch its new connected ski pass system, which can be integrated into ski slopes around the world to help them manage capacity and safety in realtime.

Around 100 people die on ski slopes across Europe every winter, and Mountain Technologies’ LifePass system was designed to help combat that by helping to keep track of people and slope safety. The system was designed to minimise the intrusion of technology on the outdoor sports experience, and does not require a mobile phone to operate. The firm pitched to investors at a HBAN Ulster event earlier this year.

Pete McFetridge from Mountain Technologies said: "As we move from the testing phase of LifePass to supplying the solution to customers, we will be investing in our sales and marketing. Smart technology is being used around the world in many different sectors and we want to use that technology to transform mountain resort operational management and improve safety for those enjoying winter sports. We believe our technology will save lives."

Jim Curran, Regional Manager for HBAN in Northern Ireland, added: "The product designed by Mountain Technologies aims to take away an area of concern from ski resort operators and the HBAN members who have invested in the company believe there will be strong demand for its innovative technology. By pitching to an HBAN event the company has been able to access a diverse group of business angels to help the company on the next stage of its journey."
