Food waste app Gander has had a significant impact on reducing food waste, increasing sales of reduced-price food by 45%.
Back in August, food tech firm Henderson Technology launched its ambitious app designed to help eliminate food waste in local stores. Smartphone app Gander allows users to look up their local participating Spar, EuroSpar, ViVO, and ViVOxtra store and displays a list of all the food the stores have discounted, with the goal of encouraging local shoppers to pick it up before it goes to waste.
The app integrates with the store's existing point of sale tech, so the list in the app is live. It's been downloaded over 41,000 times over the past four months, and is already having a significant impact on reducing food waste. Participating stores have seen a 45% increase in the amount of reduced-price food sold before it has to be thrown out, bringing total reduced price sales to 85-100%.
Gander founder Ashley Osborne commented on the success of the app in Northern Ireland: "The traction and growth of Gander has been amazing. [...] Shoppers are feeling empowered thanks to Gander, aiding them to be more sustainable in their shopping choices. This supports the app’s endeavour to decrease and prevent food waste and create a more sustainable environment has also proved highly effective."
The app is currently available on iOS and Android and works with 310 participating Spar, EuroSpar, ViVO, and ViVOxtra stores. Its success may soon see it deployed to other retailers across the UK and Ireland in the coming months.
