  • Crumlin-based Randox Laboratories has developed a test for coronavirus which is set to be used in Chinese hospitals.

The test is currently being shipped to hospitals in the cities of Wuhan and Guangzhou. It has the ability to identify the medically coined COVID-19 and is said to differentiate the virus from nine other respiratory infections simultaneously.

Known as the multiplex Viral Respiratory Infection Array, managing director of Randox Dr Peter FitzGerald said that he is “delighted that this new technology will be deployed in Wuhan and other cities across China.

"The Coronavirus Biochip will eliminate the need for multiple back-and-forth tests before the root cause of symptoms is found, thereby empowering clinicians to make faster and better-informed decisions.”

The test was developed on a platform technology known as a Biochip.

It will be used at the Central Theatre General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army in Wuhan, which was the core of the coronavirus’ outbreak.

It will also be used in The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University.

Randox said the test is capable of processing 324 patient samples and generating 3240 reportable results in eight hours.
