AI Dungeon turns literally anything into a text adventure game, with hilarious results

  • The GPT-2 neural network network model released last year has been used to create a hilarious text adventure game about absolutely anything you want.

At a time when many artificial intelligence stories are warning of the dangers the technology could have to jobs and online discourse, developers have created something incredibly fun using AI -- The ultimate text adventure game. AIDungeon uses a neural network to give detailed responses to even the most obscure commands the user care to give it, and some of the results posted online have been hilarious.

AI Dungeon was created by developer Nick Walton using the recently released GPT-2 AI model, the text-generation neural network that OpenAI researchers initially refused to release last February for fear that it could be used to create believable automated propaganda or worse.

Nick instead used the AI model to make a whimsical text adventure game, which is now available as a free app on Android and iOS or can be accessed on the web. Development of the game is funded using crowdfunding platform Patreon, where over 3,458 people from around the world are currently paying a collective $16,100 US per month to help keep the app free to use for the general public.

The core tech behind AIDungeon is pretty impressive, capable of generating endless believable narratives and respond realistically to user instructions. Because GPT-2 was trained on millions of publicly accessible webpages, people have even found that it can generate hilarious adventures about extremely specific things such as linux installation procedures.
