Local MedTech firm axial3D wins Belfast Startup World Cup

  • Local medical technology firm axial3D has won the Belfast phase of the Startup World Cup competition, and will now go on to compete for $1m US of investment from a top VC firm.

Belfast-based start-up axial3D has really been making waves in the medical technology scene recently, having recently won the Emerging MedTech Company of the Year category at the 2018 Irish MedTech Excellence Awards and formed a partnership with University Hospital Basel in Switzerland.

The company produces precision 3D prints from medical data to assist surgeons with pre-operative planning and assessment of treatment options on an individual basis. The firm was a big hit at this month's South by Southwest (SXSW) conference when it gave a talk on how a 3D printed kidney model helped a Belfast surgeon perform a world-first life-saving transplant.

Now the firm can add the Startup World Cup to its list of accomplishments after it beat 12 other emerging tech companies in Belfast to take the top spot. In addition to a token prize of £2,500, the firm will now advance to the global stage of the Startup World Cup in San Francisco this May to compete against other regional winners from around the world, including India, Russia, UAE, USA, and China. The overall winner will net a $1m US investment from VC firm Fenox Capital.
