NIE Networks reveals innovations shaping Northern Ireland’s electricity future

  • NIE Networks launched its first RP7 Innovation Report, highlighting how new ideas and technologies are helping build a more resilient, low carbon electricity system for Northern Ireland.

The report sets out how innovation is supporting the company’s goal of delivering a sustainable energy system that benefits customers, communities and the wider economy.

As more homes and businesses switch to electricity for things like transport and heating, and as more renewable energy connects to the network, the system needs to change. Innovation is key to managing these changes while helping to create a cleaner and more flexible network, ensuring the transition to low carbon energy remains affordable and accessible.

In the last 7 years, NIE Networks has implemented 23 innovation projects and going forward will be scaling up its approach, moving beyond adopting proven solutions to actively developing and trialling new technologies.

One project highlighted in the report involves the use of drones to install real-time sensors on Northern Ireland’s electricity transmission network. This marks the first time this has been carried out on live transmission power lines anywhere in the UK, improving network visibility while reducing disruption and risk. This project is one of many that emphasis how new technologies can bring significant change to the electricity network.

The report also emphasises the importance of collaboration, recognising that innovation is strongest when organisations work together to share learning, test new ideas and develop practical solutions. We recently hosted a stakeholder workshop with representatives from industry, academia and government to engage in our development of new innovation projects and bring these different perspectives together to shape our way forward.
