Fujitsu: Apprentices in action

  • - Written by the team at Fujitsu NI

Bringing fresh ideas and new perspectives, apprenticeships have played a key role in Fujitsu’s position at the forefront of Northern Ireland’s ever-evolving digital sector.

As part of the Department for the Economy’s IT and Telecoms Professional Apprenticeship Programme, Fujitsu NI’s highly successful apprenticeship scheme has been running since 2012, and provides career progression opportunities, with up to 90% of apprentices moving into permanent positions with Fujitsu.

The apprenticeship scheme is organised in conjunction with Belfast Metropolitan College and North West Regional College (NWRC), where apprentices have access to a range of courses from Cyber Security to Software Development.

We caught up with apprentices from Fujitsu NI to hear more about their experiences.

    Rian McCreight:

"Apprenticeships are a great way to learn on the job. When I saw the opportunity to gain qualifications while working I was really interested and, since starting the apprenticeship, I have learned a range of skills both professionally and personally that I would not have gained by just studying and not working.”

    Steven McCready:

“This summer I’ll be completing my Foundation degree in Software Development and Fujitsu has offered me the position of Professional Software Developer as part of the Fujitsu Microsoft Business Applications Practice.

I love working at Fujitsu Northern Ireland – the scope of work is incredible and there’s plenty of opportunities to upskill and learn about new technologies."

    Brian O’Neill:

“The best thing about being an apprentice at Fujitsu is working with like-minded people who encourage you to be the best you can be.

The IT sector in NI has grown rapidly over the last few years, and there's lots of potential to grow and progress your career. Gaining the qualifications and experience simultaneously is not only better for your career path, but also much more enjoyable!"

Through Fujitsu’s apprenticeship programme, students receive extensive mentorship and hands-on, practical learning experiences, where they will gain invaluable knowledge and expertise on key digital areas such as cloud application development and networking infrastructure. Alongside this, students benefit from a two-year development programme, which offers courses in leadership and business awareness, plus additional courses of their choosing.
