Madhumita moved to Belfast in 2018 to embark on a career within Operate Technology (OpTech) and has been part of the team helping deliver operational excellence for our clients.
Having graduated with an Engineering degree in her hometown in India, Madhumita couldn’t find the right career opportunity to allow her to work on sophisticated projects and took the leap to move to PwC UK.
As a Senior Associate working in the automation team, each day presents new challenges and opportunities to learn and explore new ways of working. Through her hard work and project delivery Madhumita’s been promoted and recognised within her team for the impact she’s made.
“I was involved in one of the first automation bots created within OpTech which aimed to review letters from audit clients with increased accuracy and time efficiency. On average each review took 30 minutes, totalling approximately 5000 hours per year. The bot I helped create has reduced this down to 11 minutes per letter and accuracy has also increased. I’m still involved with this project now as we’re always looking for improvements.”
At PwC we encourage our people to take the time to upskill themselves throughout their career, and it was one of the reasons Madhumita chose to join PwC. Training for UiPath, Appscript, NLP, JavaScript, and Python has helped Madhumita understand her clients requirements and give her the confidence to present her ideas. She credits this training as giving her the confidence to also train and support juniors within her team, a role she’s incredibly proud of.
It hasn’t always been easy for Madhumita to voice her opinions and she reflects that upon moving to Belfast, she initially struggled with communicating and understanding regional accents and dialects. Recognising this was a problem for her, she spoke with her career coach and worked towards speaking up in team meetings and engaging more with her colleagues.
“They were all very supportive of me joining the team and encouraged me to be involved in those meetings. I knew I had ideas which could help our automation processes and I knew I had to voice these, and over time I became more confident when speaking to clients across the different regions. Looking back, I am really thankful for my teams in supporting me through that transition as it’s undoubtedly helped me outside of work too.”
“I’d describe myself as fun loving, emotional and a caretaker. I’m really close to my family and have a great circle of friends who are always intrigued with the work I’m involved in.”
In the three years Madhumita’s worked in OpTech, she’s also been part of complex automation projects which provide checks for new and existing clients, involving up to 14 independent systems at once. What was once a manual, repetitive task, open to error, Madhumita’s experience and insight has helped the team develop a tool which will review over 70% of these client independence checks.
Her knowledge and experience has raised Madhumitas profile within the OpTech team, resulting in her being asked to review an existing automation system which had a number of issues. She was given the time to investigate these and despite no handover from the original creator, Madhumita was able to not only resolve the existing issues, but create a newer version for the business to use.
“I’m so proud of where I am in my career, what I’ve achieved and importantly, what I’m working towards next. Some of the best advice I’ve been given is to think big, don’t be afraid to be bold; in process automation and technology as an industry that’s vital. From my own experience I’d also say that establishing a connection is equally as important. Whether that’s with your team, or with your clients. It makes achieving the end goal much easier if you have that working relationship.”
Madhumita has taken ownership of her career since joining OpTech in Belfast and now helps junior developers with the future of automation.
