What does the future hold for working mums in the tech sector?

  • What does the future hold for mums working in tech? Women in Tech published a great piece this month discussing the reasons why women are not entering the tech scene and how certain courses can help with reskilling.

Statistics indicate that despite the average salary within the tech industry being in the excess of £50,000 (which is around 40% higher than the national minimum wage), these roles are still challenging to fill due to the skills gap and the volume of jobs needing filled. There are many courses in place to support women in tech, particularly mothers. Tech Mums is an initiative that is designed specifically for women who are on maternity leave and which enables them to acquire coding skills, helping mums build their skills in online security, web design, social media, and programming.

Research shows that the technology industry is increasingly flexible, with technology enabling mothers to work from home whilst managing family commitments. Having the ability to work from home and complete courses not only enriches skills and knowledge but enables mums to acquire the skills needed to enter this flexible industry. Tech Mums is a great resource for mothers who have opted to take a career break after having children but are not saying they want to stop their careers, allowing mothers to get their foot back in the door.

In an ever-changing tech industry, upskilling is critical to keeping up with the latest tech trends and allowing mothers to feel comfortable re-entering the workplace and will give them an edge. "Tech mums changed my life!" reported one Tech Mum, adding that "The Tech skills I learnt on the #techmums program have made my business more successful."

Dr Sue Black OBE, Founder of Tech Mums, clarified the ethos of the initiative on the Tech Mums website: "Today, it’s easy to see technology as the enemy, whereas in fact it can be life-changing in an incredibly positive way. Our courses help women harness that potential in their own lives." Technology is the perfect industry for mothers, as it is an industry that has adapted to a family balanced lifestyle. Top technology firms allow you to dictate your work hours, flexibility and being able to work from home means that mothers can balance children and worklife.
