Richard Ford, CTO, Integrity360, comments:
“The incident affecting SuperValu stores in Ireland follows similar disruption to refrigeration systems at major French supermarkets last month. While it is too early to establish whether these incidents are connected, they demonstrate how cyberattacks can have immediate consequences beyond traditional IT systems. For retailers, refrigeration equipment is essential to daily operations, yet connected systems can introduce risks that are easily overlooked. Equipment may be remotely managed by third-party suppliers, run outdated software or depend on access arrangements that are not subject to the same scrutiny as corporate IT systems. The priority for retailers should be understanding which operational systems are connected, who can access them and whether appropriate security updates and controls are in place. They also need to test how they would respond if critical equipment became unavailable. The disruption at SuperValu is another reminder that cyber resilience is not simply about protecting data. It is about keeping stores operational and protecting customers when essential systems are affected.”
