“The fact that this attack reportedly took a UK power facility offline for four days is significant. The plant may have been small, and the wider energy system was not put at risk, but an attacker has still demonstrated the ability to move beyond accessing or stealing data and cause real-world operational disruption. This is also another reminder that geopolitical tensions increasingly have a cyber dimension.
“Critical infrastructure and operational technology are attractive targets because disruption can have consequences far beyond the systems that are initially compromised. Organisations operating essential services need to work on the assumption that they will be targeted, whether directly by state-linked groups or by actors sympathetic to them. Resilience is therefore critical. That means understanding which systems are most important to operations, reducing unnecessary exposure, maintaining visibility across IT and OT environments, and having tested incident response and recovery plans in place. In critical infrastructure, the question cannot simply be whether an attack can be stopped. Organisations also need to know how quickly and safely they can keep essential services running or restore them when an attacker succeeds.”
