Faye Thomas, Chief Commercial Officer at Vyta, a leading specialist in secure IT Asset Disposition and Lifecycle Management (ITAD and ITALM), discusses the importance of mindful purchasing in the lead-up to the year’s busiest shopping season, highlighting how choosing recycled or reused technology can help reduce electronic waste.

As Black Friday approaches, the buzz of deals and discounts entices many to make impulse purchases, with new gadgets, upgrades, and shiny tech devices difficult to ignore for some.

However, as the busiest shopping period of the year approaches, we are encouraging consumers to take a moment to pause and consider the environmental impact of these upgrades.

Amidst the excitement of new technology and the pressure from society to keep up to date with all the latest models, many people often overlook what is a critical consideration about IT sustainability.

In an era of over consumption, E-waste has become one of the fastest growing waste streams worldwide. Each year, millions of tonnes of electronics end up in landfill, where they can release harmful chemicals into the soil, water, and air, contributing to environmental degradation.

At Vyta, our mission is to help organisations manage their redundant IT assets responsibly, focusing on the circular economy by keeping equipment in use for as long as possible whether that is through refurbishment and reuse or parts harvesting and re-manufacturing.

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday promising ’unbeatable deals’, we are encouraging consumers to shift from compulsive buying and instead consider sustainable IT options that can help mitigate the growing electronic waste crisis.

Choosing a recycled or reused device enables you to meet your technology needs responsibly while still enjoying the same quality and performance that you would expect from a brand new product.

The majority of us already have technology that meets our daily requirements and, therefore, should consider upgrading only if it is something that we really need.

Through our retail site, refreshedbyus.com, we offer consumers a wide range of refurbished devices, from high performance laptops and desktops to accessories, monitors, and more. These devices undergo thorough inspection, refurbishment and testing in our own local refurbishment centre to ensure they meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

However, sustainability doesn’t end with personal tech needs – it extends to gifting also. With the holiday season fast approaching, sustainable gifting can play a role in reducing waste. Opting for refurbished technology as a gift is a much more responsible way to give loved ones reliable, high-quality devices while doing your bit for the environment. They really won’t experience any difference from new!

These practices not only help reduce E-waste but also align seamlessly with Vyta’s core values and sustainable ethos, as outlined in our recently launched Sustainability Report. The report highlights our ongoing commitment to minimising environmental impact, championing the circular economy, and empowering organisations to make greener choices. The report also outlines Vyta’s ESG credentials across all aspects of our operations and how we promote ethical practices, prioritise the wellbeing of employees, and foster thriving communities.

By promoting these values at Vyta, we aspire to lead by example, demonstrating how responsible IT management can contribute to global sustainability goals while addressing the growing E-waste crisis. For instance, studies have shown that reuse is increasing year-on-year as more organisations adopt circular principles when managing their ITAD programmes. As a result of this, 16,300 tonnes of CO2e emissions were prevented through asset reuse between June 2023 and September 2024.

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to consider a more sustainable approach to tech shopping. Choosing refurbished tech not only benefits the planet, but it can also help you save money without compromising on functionality or reliability.

Shop our refurbished and recycled devices through our trusted third-party eCommerce platform, Refreshed by Us.
