Young Israel Izere and Paula Santkiewick have recently joined Liberty IT as Associate Software Engineers and are currently taking part in the industry leader in digital innovation’s newly redesigned TechStart Academy for entry level employees.
What is your background to date?
Young – I come from Burundi in Africa and have a passion for technology fuelled by a drive for social and economic development. I am a Computer Science graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya. For the past two years, as part of my placements and career journey, I worked in software development roles, process automation, web, cloud and data for Ecobank Kenya, UN Environment Programme and Digital Vision EA.
Paula - I studied nursing in Poland, where I achieved a bachelor’s degree and worked as a nurse in Belfast for five years. However, I decided to change my career path and I undertook the MSc Conversion course in Software Development at QUB and I am due to graduate in December.
What attracted you to the TechStart programme at Liberty IT?
Young - I was attracted by the opportunities to grow as well as Liberty IT’s diverse and inclusive company culture and their strong commitment to fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Additionally, the company’s reputation for investing in learning and development is something I greatly value as I aim to grow and excel in my career.
Paula - I learnt about Liberty IT’s TechStart program through recommendations and word-of-mouth. I also spoke to talent representatives at career fairs who really encouraged me to apply.
What are you most looking forward to?
Young - I am eager to continue learning, growing and spearheading innovation at Liberty IT, while making a meaningful impact along the way.
I am looking forward to contributing to the cutting-edge technology solutions for Liberty. I have no doubt that the forward-thinking atmosphere and learning opportunities will equip me with the knowledge to foster a positive change.
Paula - I am looking forward to the training opportunities that are being provided to us and I’m eager to learn from industry experts and advancing my tech career. I am also excited about participating in various initiatives like the Social Committee and engaging in Women in Tech.
What's been the best part of the programme so far?
Young - The practical learning sessions, the team-building activities, the illustrative games and the opportunity to physically interact with my colleagues who encompass various talents, skills, beliefs and opinions.
Paula - The amount of workshops with really passionate people who are eager to meet us and to share their knowledge. It is very inspiring.
What advice would you give to anyone considering applying for Liberty IT’s TechStart program?
Young - Give it a try. Believe in yourself. We all encompass a set of different qualities and unique features. Your uniqueness is precious and valuable. Liberty IT is a great place to support your growth.
Paula - I recommend giving your best effort at the technical challenge and make good use of the 12 hour period for the coding challenge. Additionally, take your time to learn about the company and its values to ensure it aligns with your career aspirations.
