Name: Conor Gormley
Role: Software Engineer
What does your typical day look like?
A typical day for me would be signing on in the morning and checking over emails and finishing off any work from the previous day. I then have a stand-up meeting at 11am to discuss what I am currently working on, and what needs to be completed. Outside of this, my main focus is on completing code changes, tests and resolving user’s support tickets.
What are you currently working on?
The team I am part of manages three different services. This involves maintaining and developing new features to improve the quality of the service websites and to satisfy the customer’s requirements. We also deal with any support tickets that come in from our service desk each day.
What inspired you to join this company in particular?
Civica stood out to me because they maintain and develop a lot of innovative and interesting projects that help different areas of today’s society.
I was attracted to Civica as it is also a Gold Investors in People accredited company, and it was clear to see from the job description that Civica take great care in training and developing their staff. Their graduate induction scheme was great and made it very easy to join Civica.
Did you always want to work in this industry (tech)?
My interest in the tech industry really started to evolve when I was in secondary school. I studied ICT and really enjoyed the subject and ever since then I knew it was what I wanted to pursue as a career.
What’s your favourite part about your work?
I really enjoy that my work is always evolving and changing. No two days are the same and there is always something new to learn as well as new opportunities to develop my skills. I am also part of a great team, who are very supportive and make working at Civica very enjoyable.
What would you say to other people considering a job in this industry (tech)?
I would tell anyone who is considering a job in tech to go for it. I think the tech industry can appear quite intimidating from an outsider’s perspective, however from my experience the people in the industry are very supportive and it’s a great industry for knowledge sharing and helping each other. It’s also a great opportunity to be exposed to learning something new every day!
How do you see this technology impacting on our lives?
I think it was very clear to see how much technology impacted our lives during the pandemic. During lockdown, when we were not allowed to see people in person, we were still able to stay in contact with family members and friends by using technology services such as Zoom, and many others.
Technology has also had a great impact on the way we work, today a lot of companies allow their staff to work from home which promotes a better work-life balance and gives people more opportunity to spend time with family and friends.
Who inspired you to work in this field?
I would have to say my ICT teacher in secondary school. This is where I got my first proper insight into computers and what a career might look like in the tech industry. Ever since then I have really enjoyed learning and working in the tech industry, and I haven’t looked back since.
What do you consider to be the most important tech innovation or development in recent years?
For me it would be Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is amazing to think that machines and systems have been created with the ability to think for themselves, and it doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon.
What tech gadget could you not live without
It would have to be my mobile phone. In today’s world everything is on your mobile phone, and I really would be lost without it.
