As a Software Engineer and 3rd Line Support Specialist at CGI, Muireagan works on the Viewpoint POB project, a world-leading Personnel-on-Board safety system for offshore and remote operations. This tech trailblazer shares insights into his daily work, his approach to problem-solving, and his perspective on the rapidly evolving tech industry.

What does your typical day look like?

As a Software Engineer and 3rd Line Support Specialist, a typical day involves responding to client queries or issues related to the CGI Viewpoint POB application.

When issues arise, I investigate the problem, implement code fixes, and create test plans to validate the solutions. If all issues are resolved, I focus on automating our manual testing processes - a key initiative that saves significant time for project partners when testing across multiple environments before releases.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on the CGI Viewpoint POB project. This is a world-leading POB (Personnel-on-Board) safety system that provides real-time visibility of personnel location, competence and movements for offshore and remote operations.

What inspired you to join this company in particular?

What stood out most to me when applying to CGI was the culture of partnership. I appreciated that at CGI, we are not just employees - we are partners in the company. That sense of belonging and shared ownership truly resonated with me.

Did you always want to work in this industry (tech)?

Not initially. I’ve always had an interest in technology, but when I was younger, I cared for my grandmother who had diabetes, and that experience made me consider a career in the care sector. However, as I explored different areas of technology, I discovered my true passion within solving problems, building things, and constantly learning.

What’s your favourite part about your work?

My favourite part of the job is problem-solving. I enjoy finding multiple ways to approach and resolve challenges. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how creative thinking and persistence can lead to elegant technical solutions. Every problem I solve helps me grow both professionally and personally.

What would you say to other people considering a job in this industry (tech)?

Don’t knock it until you try it! The tech industry is vast, offering endless opportunities that cater to a wide range of skills and interests. Whether you’re analytical, creative, or people-focused, there’s a place for everyone in technology.

How do you see this technology impacting our lives?

Technology is deeply woven into our daily lives - from how we communicate to how we work and learn. It connects us with loved ones across the world and empowers us to accomplish things that once seemed impossible, all from the comfort of our own homes.

Who inspired you to work in this field?

Many people have inspired me to pursue technology, but my earliest influence was my grandmother. She had teaching certifications in computing and introduced me to early computer programs like Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and Typer Shark. Those early moments sparked my curiosity and set me on this path.

What do you consider to be the most important tech innovation or development in recent years?

Without a doubt, Artificial Intelligence. The rapid evolution of AI assistants and models is reshaping how we work, learn, and create. AI enables us to analyse data, generate ideas, and write code more efficiently than ever before. However, it’s crucial that we continue to understand and validate the technology to avoid blindly introducing vulnerabilities into our applications.

What tech gadget could you not live without?

My laptop. While smartphones are convenient, a laptop offers the flexibility, performance, and control I need for coding, problem-solving, and staying productive wherever I am.
