Romita Pandita's journey into technology exemplifies how passion and adaptability can lead to fulfilling career paths in unexpected directions. As a Technology Programme Lead at PwC's Advanced Research and Engineering Centre in Belfast, she brings over 15 years of experience to complex tech transformation programmes spanning banking and cloud sectors.
With academic credentials including an M.Sc. from TERI University and a B.Sc. (Hons) from Delhi University, Romita has successfully transitioned from project management into technology delivery, where she now leads cutting-edge initiatives that bridge the gap between innovation and practical client solutions.
She recently spoke with Sync NI about her career transition, the evolving tech landscape, and why the industry benefits from diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
Have you always had an interest in technology, and was there a specific person or particular event that led you into your current role?
I’ve always been interested in technology, though I hadn’t originally planned to build a career in it. After moving to Belfast in 2015, I leveraged my project management experience to take on roles in tech delivery—and quickly found myself drawn to the energy and innovation of technology teams. When I came across the Advanced Research and Engineering Centre in PwC Operate Digital, it really resonated with me. The opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects, collaborate with universities and drive real improvements in how teams deliver solutions made it a perfect fit.
What would you consider to be the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of your job?
I enjoy working on innovative initiatives that deliver real-world benefits for clients-making their lives easier through smarter, more efficient solutions. Collaborating with universities and diverse teams brings fresh perspectives, and I find it incredibly rewarding to see how different mindsets can drive meaningful change.
In terms of career development, how important is it to build a professional network and attend industry events?
Building a strong professional network and attending industry events is essential. It opens doors to new opportunities, keeps you informed on emerging trends, and fosters connections that can inspire fresh ideas and collaborations.
How much impact can a mentor have on your personal development?
A mentor can have a significant impact by offering guidance, perspective, and encouragement. They help you navigate challenges, recognize your potential, and push you to grow. A good mentor can also lift you when you’re feeling down and remind you of your strengths when you need it most.
What guidance would you offer to any young person on why they should consider a career in technology?
A career in technology is incredibly fulfilling. You get to work with the latest innovations, have a direct impact on clients, and be at the forefront of understanding both the opportunities and risks of emerging tech. What’s more, technology offers a wide range of roles, so you can explore different areas, keep evolving, and never feel stuck in one path.
What advice would you give to women considering a career change or return to work but are daunted by the prospect of working in what can be perceived as a male-dominated industry
The technology landscape has evolved - it’s no longer a male-dominated space. Companies like PwC are deeply committed to diversity and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. There are plenty of opportunities to upskill, train and grow. My advice: be brave - take that first step and you’ll find more support and encouragement than you might expect.
For those who may not come from a STEM background, what other career opportunities exist within the tech sector beyond software engineering?
Even without a traditional tech or STEM background, there are plenty of opportunities in the tech sector. Roles like Project and Programme Management, Business Analysis, Product Management, UX/UI design, and Tech consulting all play a critical role in delivering technology solutions. Tech is a collaborative field and there’s space for a wide range of skills and experiences.
