Maisie Sinclair is a Software Engineer II at Apex Fintech Solutions, where she applies her strong technical skills and creative mindset to build effective software solutions. She graduated with First Class Honours in Software Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast. Maisie first discovered her passion for technology during her A-level studies, where being the only female in the class inspired her to succeed with the support of her teachers and parents.
As part of our Tech Trailblazers series, Maisie shares what she finds most rewarding about engineering, the value of mentorship and networking, and her advice for anyone considering a career in the tech industry.
Have you always had an interest in technology, and was there a specific person or event that led you to your current role?
My interest in technology started in school when I took the Software Systems Development A-level. I loved how the subject combined creativity, something I already enjoyed through art and design, with logical problem-solving, which I loved in subjects like math. Though no individual inspired me initially, being the only female in the class motivated me to succeed. Thankfully, my teachers and parents were incredibly supportive.

What would you consider to be the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of your job?
Collaboration is the highlight of my job. Brainstorming and designing solutions to tackle complex problems with talented teammates is incredibly rewarding and a fantastic way to grow. I also love the creativity of software engineering—there’s no single “right answer,” and the possibilities are endless. It’s all about finding a solution and refining it over time.
In terms of career development, how important is it to build a professional network and attend industry events?
Networking is invaluable. Whether it’s large conferences or casual coffee chats, you never know who you’ll meet or how their experiences might help you tackle challenges or gain new perspectives. It’s also an amazing way to learn, get mentorship, and share your own insights. Plus, let’s be real—networking events often come with great snacks!
How much impact can a mentor have on your personal development?
A mentor can have an incredible impact. I’ve personally benefited greatly from the women in tech mentorship program at Apex. Having a female leader who’s been in your shoes to offer advice, encourage you, and recognize your potential makes a world of difference. Beyond formal mentorship, I’ve also been inspired by managers and peers, who often guide and support without even realizing the influence they’ve had. Surrounding yourself with driven, supportive people is key.
What guidance would you offer to any young person on why they should consider a career in technology?
The possibilities in tech are endless, and we need more women in this field to foster diversity and innovation. In software engineering, there isn’t just one “correct” way of doing things, which can help combat imposter syndrome—something women often experience. If you’re curious, eager to learn, and ready to challenge yourself, tech is a great choice.
What advice would you give to women considering a career change or return to work but feeling daunted by the male-dominated tech industry?
Go for it! Being the minority isn’t a disadvantage—it can actually set you apart and open unique opportunities. It’s also a fantastic confidence builder as you learn to work with and learn from diverse groups of people.
For those who may not come from a STEM background, what other career opportunities exist in the tech sector beyond software engineering?
The tech industry isn’tjust about coding. At Apex, for instance, we have amazing product managers and leaders who bring strong business acumen, creativity, and client relationship skills to the table. Technology needs a mix of talents to create impactful products and services, so there’s plenty of room for those from non-STEM backgrounds to thrive.
