Tech Trailblazers

Tech Trailblazer: Shannon Reaney, Systems Security Admin Consultant, Aflac

  • Shannon Reaney is the Systems Security Admin Consultant at Aflac Northern Ireland.

Here, Shannon Reaney sits down with Sync NI to talk about the Tech Trailblazer challenge, sharing her journey into a tech career, what her daily work looks like, and why Aflac Northern Ireland is a brilliant place to grow and build your skills.

Have you always had an interest in technology and was there a specific person or source of inspiration that led you into your current career path?

I realised I wanted a career in Tech when I was about 14. ICT was the subject I enjoyed the most at secondary school, so I guess you could say my interest in technology started then. I completed a National Diploma at the South West College in Enniskillen, followed by a degree at the University of Ulster in ICT, where I was educated by people who were passionate about technology and that spurred me on to the career I have today.

What would you consider to be the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of your job?

I have been workingat AflacNI for almost 5 years now. When I joined as a security admin, I had to learn how to support various security tools. It was a challenging jump but kept me on my toes and 1 year into the role I felt a real shift in my understanding and skillset (which continues to grow).I have also been lucky to work with some incredibly talented people. Getting to build relationships with my colleagues in Northern Ireland and in the US has been so enjoyable and an absolute highlight of my time so far at Aflac NI.

In terms of career development, how important is it to build a professional network and attend industry events?

This is something I didn’t appreciate until later in my career. Once I had carved out the area I wanted to specialise in, I realised quickly that you need to network, see what’s out there and allow other people to see you!

How much impact can a mentor have on your personal development?

I have had various mentors throughout the years. I think its extremely important to have an impartial ear, someone who can keep you on the right path, encourage you andprovide some tough advice when needed. I’d advise a mentor no matter what stage you are at in your career, whether that’s just starting out or been in the industry for long time.

What guidance would you offer to any young person on why they should consider a career in technology?

If you want to work in an industry that grows and changes rapidly, then a career in Tech is for you! I’d also say, where you start out, doesn’t have to be where you end up. My career path started in desktop support and today I’m a Security Technology Consultant. A career in Tech means plenty of scope for change.

What advice would you give to women considering a career change or who are returning to work who might be daunted at the prospect of working in what can be perceived as a male dominated industry?

I think you should follow your gut. If you are considering a career change, go for it, but be prepared. This is where networking, building relationships and having a mentor can be beneficial.

I’ve worked in male dominated teams my entire career. When I was just starting out as a graduate it was dauting because I didn’t have the confidence I have now. My advice would be to remember that we are all human, don’t’ be afraid to get to know people and to speak up!

For those who may not come from a STEM background, what other career opportunities exist within the tech sector beyond software engineering?

Over the years, I have worked in desktop support as well as various security engineering andnetwork operations roles. I even tried my hand at application support, before realisingSecurity was the area for me. A career is Tech is what you make it – just be open to change!
