Louise McAteer is the Site Lead ASOS Northern Ireland at ASOS.
Here, Louise McAteer sits down with Sync NI to take part in the Tech Trailblazer challenge, discussing their pathway into a career in tech, what a day in their life looks like, and why ASOS is a great company to grow and build your skills.
Have you always had an interest in technology, and was there a specific person or particular event that led you into your current role?
I originally studied nutrition so I never thought I’d end up in a technical role. My first job after university ended up being in a tech support role, which sparked my interest in the field. From there, I saw the MSc in Queens which I knew would be a great entry point into the industry.
What would you consider to be the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of your job?
As Site Lead there is a lot of variety in the role - no two days look the same. Problem solving is a key skill. I also get to work with brilliant people which makes the job really rewarding.
In terms of career development, how important is it to build a professional network and attend industry events?
Having a great network in the industry is key. There are so many people you can learn from. It’s also a great opportunity to share your own knowledge.
How much impact can a mentor have on your personal development?
I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible people over the course of my career who have helped me grow and develop. Now I’m a big believer in giving back to others to pay that forward.
What guidance would you offer to any young person on why they should consider a career in technology?
The variety of roles and projects you get to work means you’re always being challenged and learning new skills.
What advice would you give to women considering a career change or return to work but are daunted by the prospect of working in what can be perceived as a male-dominated industry?
The industry is so supportive of those making the transition and offers lots of flexibility. I’d say to anyone considering it - go for it!
For those who may not come from a STEM background, what other career opportunities exist within the tech sector beyond software engineering?
There are plenty of other roles outside Software Engineering, from Recruitment to Product, Team Leads and Site Leads. There really is something for everyone!
