  • Paul Hearty Manager in Technology Consulting at EY Northern Ireland.

Here, Paul takes on the Tech Trailblazer challenge with Sync NI, sharing insights into his journey into the tech industry, what a typical day looks like, and why EY is the ideal place to grow a career and work on innovative technology solutions that make a real impact.

What does your typical day look like?

I usually start my day by reviewing my "To Do" list in the morning and then setting specific objectives for the day. As a Manager in Technology Consulting at EY Northern Ireland, my tasks often include conducting client workshops to elicit and document business requirements, analysing data to identify trends and insights, creating detailed process maps to visualise current and future state workflows, and actively participating in scrum ceremonies to drive successful product development.

What are you currently working on?

Creating new software for the business users of a large public sector client.

What inspired you to join this company in particular?

I was attracted to a career at EY because of the opportunity to work across a diverse range of industries, and an opportunity to grow my career with a large global firm.

Did you always want to work in this industry (Tech)?

Yes, it was always my aspiration, I.C.T was my favourite subject in school, and I then went on to complete a degree in Business Information Technology at QUB. At EY there are teams working on many different solutions for clients in Data & Analytics, Intelligent Automation, Cybersecurity and Managed Services to name a few. Technology is such a wide-ranging industry and there really are so many opportunities out there and that’s what interested me.

What’s your favourite part about your work?

Meeting new clients and helping them solve their technical challenges from end to end.

What would you say to other people considering a job in this industry (Tech)?

There are lots of different areas of tech, it’s not just coding, so grow your skills/certifications in the areas of tech that interest you!

How do you see this Technology impacting on our lives?

Technology and especially AI is going to be replacing more and more day to day tasks.

Who inspired you to work in this field?

I originally started out as a software developer but working alongside a Technology Business Analyst in a previous job inspired me to take the leap from software engineering to Business Analyst and beyond working on bridging the gap between IT and business teams using technology.

What do you consider to be the most important tech innovation or development in recent years?

For me it’s the innovations in AI, and how it has replaced procedural tasks within society. I am intrigued to how it will continue to innovate, as society learns to adopt to its advancements.

What tech gadget could you not live without?

    Definitely my phone!
