Year 13 students from Bangor Grammar School, St Louis Grammar School in Kilkeel and St Dominic's Grammar School for Girls in Belfast, gained insight into the world of ICT at special work experience coding workshops delivered by leading global ICT solutions provider, Fujitsu.
The workshops are based on a series of user-friendly manuals – the ‘Go Berserk’ coding books - authored by Stranmillis University College lecturer, Ian Simons. The learning resource encourages young people to learn software coding skills such as HTML and CSS from an early age.
Fujitsu, who sponsored the latest coding manual, ‘Go Berserk – making more websites with CSS’, devised the work experience programme as a way to equip students with the skills needed for a career in the ICT sector and to provide insight on the diverse employment opportunities available in the industry.
Speaking about the ‘Go Berserk’ Work Experience Programme, Sinead Dillon, Principal Consultant at Fujitsu said;
“Developing and harnessing ICT skills, is a powerful way of extending educational and career opportunities. As well as opening up a range of career options - from working in digital and cloud services to becoming an analyst or engineer – ICT skills and improved technological literacy can better prepare young people for any workplace given increased digitalisation and reliance on technology across all businesses.”
As well as delivering the ‘Go Berserk’ Work Experience Programme, Fujitsu supports the ICT skills development of local young people through a number of initiatives including its apprenticeship and graduate training schemes, participation in career fairs and workshops, and is also a proud sponsor of the Department for Economy ‘Apprentice of the Year’ Award.
