    Your role in the team

     

    Allstate Northern Ireland provides a wide range of IT Services across the Allstate Family of companies and we are excited to be partnering with fellow group member Squaretrade, in standing up a new team to support the company’s rapidly growing European growth strategy.

     

    Squaretrade specializes in extended warranty services for consumer electronics and appliances.   The EU Business is experiencing hockey-stick growth and has ambitious goals to be a $500 million business by the end of 2022. The business plans to grow aggressively in the Consumer Electronics category as well as the B2B segment of providing protection plans for small businesses.

     

    The Squaretrade Allstate NI Engineering team will play a critical role in supporting the EU business meet its growth targets and contribute to the delivery of key offerings that will facilitate the growth strategy.

     

    If you're looking for an exciting, high profile opportunity, then you've come to the right place! We are looking for a talented and energetic Lead Software Engineer to be a key member of a team that uses technology to solve challenging business problems.

     

    You will develop complex business offerings using a test-and-learn methodology, continuously evaluate new technologies, and support our best-in-class claims processing applications. You will be an active contributor to the ongoing evolution of our platform to a microservices-based, distributed and event-driven architecture that supports transactions at internet scale. You will be working closely with software architects, product managers, business analysts, and collaborating with a team of onsite & remote engineers.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

     

    • Design, Code, Test, Document and Release new application features that contribute to the hyper-growth of the business, while creating a great experience for our customers.
    • Lead critical initiatives, mentor team members, and promote a quality-first mindset.
    • Build resilient and highly-responsive cloud native and containerized applications that can scale horizontally and vertically.
    • Release code when ready and manage deployment risk by leveraging patterns like canary deployments, feature toggles and circuit breakers to maximize application availability and responsiveness.
    • Take a domain-driven approach in designing and implementing your SaaS APIs and reduce tight-coupling and dependencies by implementing an event-driven architecture.
    • Full-stack ownership of applications through development and production, including managing your releases, performance testing of your APIs, implementing monitors and alerts and owning availability and production incident SLAs.
    • Participate in an Agile environment using Scrum software development methodology.
    • Continuously evaluate and do POCs on new technologies to improve team productivity and engagement.

     

     

     

     

    So, what are the essential criteria to apply?

     

    • All candidates must evidence an existing right to work in the UK'
    • 4+ years of software development experience
    • Demonstrate technical leadership skills with experience in application architecture and design to support web scale transactions
    • Strong development skills in Java with knowledge of RESTful APIs design and Spring/Spring Boot 2.0 framework
    • Experience authoring high performance, production quality code

     

     

    We also have some desirable criteria

     

     

    • Ability to multitask and handle multiple complex tasks at the same time
    • Experience with relational databases like MySQL or Postgres, and event streaming systems such as Kafka
    • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum
    • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
