Senior Technical Writer

• Hi, I’m Melissa Casburn, Director of User Experience at Puppet,

  I’m looking for a Senior Technical Writer to join our Technical Publications (Tech Pubs) team. We want someone driven to help customers by providing crisp, engaging, and informative content that anticipates their needs and provides straightforward solutions. Tech Pubs creates user-facing documentation and UI strings that help our customers quickly get the most value from our products. We partner with engineering teams, writing content as part of the development process, and work closely with product managers, UX, and support to contribute to the holistic creation of the product. 

  Meaningful work you’ll contribute

  • Help bring customers quickly and efficiently to value with Puppet products by creating  documentation that is targeted, friendly, and efficient.
  • Support and collaborate with an enthusiastic team of professional writers who work together to solve complex content problems through experience, research, and experimentation.
  • Represent the docs perspective in product and engineering decision-making processes.
  • Provide leadership, support, and mentoring to less experienced writers.

  • Passionate about the role that great documentation plays in a product ecosystem.

  Valuable experiences and skills you’ll bring to Puppet

  • 5+ years as a technical writer in a software development environment
  • Clear, efficient, and communicative writing
  • Empathy for the documentation needs of our sysadmin and IT professional audience at all levels
  • Experience learning complex, abstract technology by using a combination of documentation, web research, help from friends and/or strangers, and direct experimentation
  • Experience authoring in XML, particularly DITA, and plain text markup languages such as Markdown
  • Experience using OxygenXML Author or a similar XML editor
  • Experience utilizing and contributing to a house style guide
  • Experience using Git and GitHub
  • Experience writing in an Agile environment

  Bonus, but not required (shout about it in your application if you have experience)

  • Experience writing developer or system administrator content (or experience in one of those roles)
  • Experience writing documentation or in-product help for a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product
  • Experience writing UI strings
  • Experience configuring DITA Open Toolkit
  • Experience using video creation software such as Camtasia
  • Experience documenting REST APIs
  • Some knowledge of any of the following: CSS, YAML, JSON, Schematron, XPATH, or XSLT/XSL-FO
