Project Manager - Research and Engineering

    The Role

     

    We’ve invested £40m into the creation of our Advanced Research and Engineering Centre in Belfast, part funded by Invest NI. We’re creating a team of engineers and technologists who’ll work within a bigger innovation ecosystem, including government, University academia and business, to help our clients take giant leaps, rather than incremental steps.

     

    The role sits within our Advanced Research and Engineering Centre, based in Belfast, delivers pivotal breakthroughs to uncover the next generation of operational technology. As part of a team of innovative thinkers, you’ll work together to design solutions that will define the next decade and beyond.



    As Project Manager, responsibilities will include;

     

    • Working with and guiding cross functional and diverse teams to own, lead and articulate the objectives, outputs and high-level benefits to be delivered by each project.

    • Contributing towards elements of the business case or financial investment case.

    • Ensuring shared clarity of scope, good estimating, solution development and management of risk. 

    • Owning the production of a Project Management Plan (PMP) or equivalent document to reach an agreement with stakeholders and managing your teams to the plan. 

    • Defining team member roles, setting expectations, and ensuring timely feedback.

    • Ensuring appropriate tools are deployed and that methods and practices are implemented and followed to ensure a successful outcome for each project.

    • Helping to own, drive and support exciting research, engineering and software development projects from discovery to delivery.

    • Developing and reviewing estimates and assumptions for the project’s schedule, effort, and cost using established models, best practices, and past experience. These will  account for all deliverables and activities in the project scope.

    • Measuring and monitoring progress at clearly defined points in the process to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meets or exceeds expectations.

    • Balancing scope, scheduling, budgeting, quality, and risks and moving through defined stage gates.

    • Working alongside other leads to develop, implement, and maintain the Management Plan, including the configuration management, risk management, project measurement, change and quality management plans.

    • Ensuring all requirements, project plans, and changes to scope are communicated to all affected team members. 

    • Working with Scrum Masters and Team Leaders across development, testing and release to ensure successful delivery and outcome or implementation.

    • Managing relationships and coordinating work between different teams at different locations. 

    • Managing relationships with all suppliers and subcontractors - monitoring their progress and adherence to the contract.

    • Ensuring project teams follow all quality assurance processes, including periodic reviews and transitions.

    • Reviewing and managing all changes to the requirements through a formally defined scope change process.

    • Representing the project team at meetings and obtaining buy-in from senior management for all key project plans, commitments, and changes including requirements, quality assurance plans, budget, schedule, and scope changes.

     

    Skills and experience

     

    • Experience as a Project Manager with advanced knowledge of project management techniques and tools

    • Experience of working on either technology, product, software development, or business transformation projects

    • Excellent ability to work cross functionally within an organisation

    • Proven experience in strategic planning, risk management and change management

    • Planning and organizing blend between waterfall and agile - keeping systems simple and coupled where needed

    • Ability to lead and coach others
