Senior Engineer in Chirp Sonar Research Project

  • We are seeking to appoint a Senior Engineer to join the team on a 35-month fixed-term contract or until 31 January 2024, whichever is soonest, in the first instance. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the interface between Academia and Industry, you will play a leadership role in developing the next generation sonar system for high-resolution underwater imaging. The developed sonar system will be deployed as an essential component of the hydrofoil vessel navigation and collision avoidance system.

This position is part of the £33m UKRI-funded Belfast Maritime Consortium led by Artemis Technologies, the flagship programme for the UK Department for Transport’s Maritime 2050 strategy aiming to produce the world’s first fully autonomous electric hydrofoil vessel.

The Artemis autonomous sailing vessel will be the world’s first hydro-foiling and self-regenerating commercial vessel, capable of operating without the consumption of any fossil fuels which will pioneer the decarbonisation of maritime globally. As a Senior Engineer you will design the software and hardware architectures of a new sonar system and closely collaborate with both CWI (electronic, electroacoustic) and Artemis Technologies (mechanical, structural and naval) interdisciplinary engineering teams, at the design and technology evaluation stages. This project offers unique opportunities to gain new knowledge and experience across the range of technology areas including embedded systems design, electronics, sonar technology and naval design and engineering. Artemis Technologies and CWI have a proven record of accomplishment of converting innovative concepts to validated commercially oriented solutions. This project will not only create new commercial opportunities, but also help solve major environmental challenges through the use of zero-emission maritime technologies.

ECIT is unique within the University in that it combines QUB academic and research staff with both industry-experienced Engineering and Commercial teams. Together these teams work to bring internal technology research into the realm of external industry partners to encourage adoption and raise the bar in Secure Connected Intelligence. As Engineers, we use a pragmatic approach to finding the right tool for the job, and are not dogmatic about any particular technology stack. You will find a mix of C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, R, Shell, VHDL and more.

The successful candidate must have and your CV/Cover letter should clearly demonstrate you have:

    • Minimum of 2:1 Honours Degree, or equivalent, in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline.
    • Significant and extensive research and/or industrial product development experience involving the design of real-time embedded systems.
    • Demonstrable experience in the design and evaluation of electronic hardware architectures
    • Evidence of well-developed embedded software development skills in C++, C# or other relevant languages including the use of code configuration management.
    • Demonstrable experience in real-time operating systems for the embedded systems design.
    • Strong demonstrable experience in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) design and applications.
    • A sustained track record of delivering quality outputs such as technical reports, major component design specifications and project deliverables which have successfully passed formal quality review procedures.

The successful candidate will be offered substantial opportunities to build his/her career, including training in leadership, innovation, commercialization and soft skills, and the opportunities in close collaboration with industrial partners (Artemis Technologies).
