    EEECS perform world class research across within the Queen’s Global Research Institute on Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT), the Pioneer Research Program on Intelligent Advanced Manufacturing Systems (iAMS), and a core disciplinary research Cluster in Electronics and Computer Engineering (ECE). Our Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) research was ranked 5th in the UK in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

    You will be working as part of a world-leading research team, where you will help to develop exciting new technologies that will contribute to future wireless applications such as 5G+ and the Internet-of-Things (IoT). In this fast pace environment, you will have the opportunity to develop your own skills and expertise through exposure to the innovative technologies and measurement techniques that are helping to drive these fields.

    Your contribution to the team will include the following:

    • Manufacture and assembly of microwave prototype circuits to a high level of accuracy, using hybrid assembly techniques
    • Programming and operation of microwave measurement instruments, to include: spectrum analyser; vector network analyser; anechoic chamber; signal sources; and high frequency oscilloscopes
    • Provision of detailed technical information, guidance and support to relevant staff as appropriate to assist in the development, construction and modification of microwave through sub-millimetre wave assemblies and apparatus using specialist techniques such as manual and/or automatic surface mount component placement and precision soldiering
    • Procure and set-up specialised equipment and apparatus for use by academics, postdoctoral researchers and students in practical experiments. Construction and assembly of apparatus in house and off-site, if required
    • Prepare and carry out procedures for tests/experiments and collate data for interpretation, e.g. the preparation of reports at a level commensurate with grade

    The successful candidate must have:

    • HND/HNC, NVQ level 4 in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) discipline and/or Apprenticeship in a microwave industrial / academic environment
    • Evidence of lab supervision and management experience
    • Experience of and ability to understand, conceptualise and interpret the technical requirements of staff, students and other clients
    • Four years technical experience in a relevant role to include experience of high frequency electronics, fabrication and test of microwave assemblies to include experience in the following specialist techniques;
      • Manual and/or automatic surface mount component placement;
      • Precision soldering;
      • RF measurement using Vector Network Analysers, Spectrum analysers, signal sources and high frequency oscilloscopes
    • Experience of training staff/students on routine fabrication and measurement techniques

    Salary scale: £28,331 to £32,817 per annum
