Network Technician Apprentice/Trainee

    Information Services provides the digital campus and Library Resources to support teaching, research and innovation for all the University’s students, staff and visitors. Our primary objective is to provide the highest quality user-facing services and associated enabling functions.

    The post holder will train as a network technician, to undertake a program of academic study and hands on work experience in order to gain the required skills and knowledge to support the network requirements of the Queens University of Belfast.

    The successful candidate will work in the Network Group within Infrastructure, in support of the University’s teaching, learning, research and administration activities through the development and support of its data communication network.

    Main duties to include:

    • Working as part of a team to configure and install the network equipment that connect end users to the campus network and Internet including:
    • Network Switches
    • IP telephones
    • Wireless access points and systems
    • Interacting with customers in a professional manner and being an ambassador for Information Services within the University.
    • Participating and contributing to project teams engaged in network development work.
    • Participating in projects with other Groups and Divisions.

    The successful candidate will have: 

    • GCSE level (or equivalent) English and Mathematics
    • Knowledge of PC/Apple Mac systems and applications in particular
    • Knowledge/experience of windows 7/10
    • Ability to troubleshoot/investigate Internet access settings: DHCP etc.
    • The principles behind the TCP/IP protocols that are used on the network
    • Experience of commands and tools used to troubleshoot Internet/Network connectivity.
    • Must be willing to undertake and complete an agreed course of study
    • A strong interest in IT
    • Occasional work in the evening and at weekends, at such times to be arranged by consultation to meet the needs of the University.

    It is a requirement of the post of network technician that they have a full valid driving licence.

    The Trainee would be expected to have or be working towards gaining this licence.

    Salary scale:   £17,751 - £20,836 per annum (potential to progress to £22,017 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution)
