Belfast-based software firm, TapSOS have become the UK's first accredited company for digital 999 reporting, with their new app that allows the public to alert emergency services in a non-verbal manner.

After a four-year accreditation process, the company have received approval from BAPCO, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and are supported by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Due to various physical, medical or situational reasons, it is not always possible for different individuals to audibly request 999 assistance.

Instead, The TapSOS app uses icons and a step-by-step assisted process to send a 999 alert.

TapSOS’s Founder, Becca Hume wanted to improve emergency service accessibility when she discovered a real need for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

The app costs 99p to download and is available for anyone using Apple or Android smartphones, although will be particularly useful for those who might find calling 999 difficult.

A ‘try it’ feature within the app gives an opportunity to 'look around' without raising any alarm.

"Many people have taken the time to reach out to us and thank us for providing this new app," said Becca. "A popular feature has been the preview mode which is a safe zone for people to get familiar, comfortable and confident with the app, ahead of any real emergencies.”

Becca was also one of 40 women across the UK to receive Innovate UK’s ‘Women in Innovation’ award 2020/21.

The 2021/22 competition opens for applications this month (August 2021) and Becca is encouraging women from Northern Ireland to apply.

"I’m six months into the 12-month award programme and the support and opportunities that have been made available are transformative," she said.
