Geographic information specialists, Esri Ireland have created an interactive digital map of Ireland’s Blue Flag beaches and marinas for 2021, using Esri’s ArcGIS mapping system.
The internationally recognised Blue Flag beach award is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education and is widely considered the gold standard for beaches.
This year, 83 Irish beaches have received the accolade, as well as 10 marinas. The Blue Flag season for beaches in Ireland coincides with the bathing season which runs from 1 June to 15 September (the marina season extends until December). Blue Flag sites are only awarded for one season at a time.
The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels. Beaches and marinas that achieve this accolade comply with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and beach management.
