  • Applications are now open for Northern Ireland Screen's new Restart scheme, offering 4 months of paid game development training to 30 individuals

The video game industry has exploded recently, with games now making more money globally than the movies and music combined. Game development uses skills that are highly valued in Northern Ireland's tech sector, from software development and project management to pipeline development and VR/AR dev skills.

Local body Northern Ireland Screen is now supporting the local games industry with an ambitious new training programme for 30 individuals interested in working in game development. The Restart programme is aimed at those aimed 19-30 years old who are not currently in full-time education or full-time employment, and all participants will be paid a part time salary to attend.

No specific qualifications or game development experience are required to join the programme. Participants will be trained in using the Unity Game Engine and will have the opportunity to take Unity's Certificed Associate Game Developer qualification. Part of the 4-month programme will also put participants into teams to create a short game in 8 weeks.

The programme will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7th Dec 2020 to 31st March 2021 and will be delivered entirely remotely. Anyone without access to equipment to take part remotely will be provided with equipment, and the programme is keen to get applications from women as they are under-represented in this sector.

Head over to the NI Screen website for more information or to apply for the programme. The deadline for applications is 12 noon on Friday 6th November.
