EE named the UK's #1 5G network by testing group RootMetrics

  • Mobile provider EE has been named RootMetrics' top network provider in the UK for 2020, with internet speeds in Belfast beating all other providers.

The global 5G data network has been rolling out across the world this year, and one of the first places in the UK to get it was Belfast. EE launched its 5G network in Belfast last year along with deployments in London, Cardiff, and Edinburgh, followed by O2 and other providers.

Independent testing group RootMetrics awards scores each year for internet connectivity across a range of metrics, measuring Overall Performance, Network Reliability, Network Accessibility, Network Speed, Data Performance, Call Performance, and Text Performance.

EE has announced that it's been named the number one network in the UK for 5G availability across 16 key cities measured, including Belfast. It's also been named the number one overall mobile network for the seventh year running. EE's mobile network recorded a median download speed of 60.1 Mbps in Belfast, almsot 50% higher than its UK aggregate median speed of 42.6Mbps.

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer business, commented on the score: "Being recognised as the UK’s best network for the seventh year running reflects our continued investment in keeping our customers connected to the things that matter most. RootMetrics’ 5G testing shows that we are a long way ahead in terms of 5G performance, and our engineers are continuing to build new sites every day to bring the latest mobile technology to even more people."
