Twitter announced that it's planning to allow staff to continue working from home indefinitely after the pandemic if their role makes that suitable.
While some firms have ahd to cease operations during the current pandemic, many tech firms have been able to keep their workers active by moving to a work from home model. Working from home has become the new normal for a lot of us in the tech sector, and there's now a real possibility that some of those roles could stay remote when lockdowns begin to lift.
Twitter has become one of the first major global firms to come out and endorse working from home, not as a stop-gap measure during the pandemic but as an ongoing policy. This week Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sent a message to all staff explaining that they can continue to work remote for as long as they want.
Speaking to TechCrunch this week, Jack explained "The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen."
Twitter will be opening its offices when it can be sure it's safe to do so (September at the earliest), and some roles will of course have to be office-based, but it will be up to employees to decide when they come back to the office or if they want to stay remote. Business travel and company events are also being restricted for at least the rest of 2020 and possibly into 2021.
