Google's first Irish scholarship for women in tech open for applications

  • Google has launched its first ‘Women Techmakers’ university scholarship in the Republic of Ireland, which is now open for applications.

Each successful applicant will receive €5,000 per year for the duration of their undergraduate studies, for up to four years.

Those eligible to apply must be currently enrolled as a first or second year undergraduate student at a university/institute of technology in the Republic of Ireland (Northern Ireland universities/institutes do not apply).

They must be studying computer science, computer engineering or a closely related technical field.

Applicants must also intend to continue pursuing their Bachelor’s degree for at least the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years.

Google stated that potential applicants should demonstrate a strong academic record, exemplify leadership and show a passion for increasing the involvement of women in technology.

This is the first time the ‘WTM Scholarship’ will be implemented in Ireland and is an extension of an already established global programme by Google.

Jessica McCarthy, Director of Engineering at Google Ireland said that “the programme aims to engage a new generation of young women in Irish universities and related institutions and foster a more positive view of the actual working experience of women in the Irish tech sector.”

All scholarship recipients will also be invited to attend the annual Google Student Retreat in one of Google’s Europe offices in 2020, where they will meet with fellow scholars and participate in multiple developmental workshops.

Sync NI reached out to the Women Techmakers Scholars Program to ask whether women in Northern Ireland could apply. They responded by saying that although unfortunately the scholarship is not available to applicants in Northern Ireland, they apologise, have fed this back and said: "Hopefully next year we can expand the scholarship to include Northern Ireland."

Those wishing to apply for Google’s Women Techmakers Irish University Scholarship, can do so by visiting the Google scholarships page. Applications will be open until Thursday 5th of December 2019.  For questions on the scholarship programme students can email WTMScholars@google.com
