A major new office development on the site of the former army barracks in Derry may lead to the creation of 1,000 jobs.
The Department for Infrastructure has approved the development of a major new office development in Derry that could lead to the creation of 1,000 jobs in the area. The offices will be built on the site of the former Ebrington Barracks and will include two large office buildings and a two-level underground car park with space for 214 vehicles.
Interest in the building has reportedly already been expressed from a high-profile IT or financial services firm, which has been approached to become the anchor tenant of the development. Given the average wages in those industries, the Department for Infrastructure believes that it could attract £23.7m per year in wages to the city.
The Department for Infrastructure's planning department projected that the buildings would support between 750 and 1,000 jobs when built and will create an additional 120 jobs during construction. The construction is being led by Draperstown firm Heron Bros, and the two buildings will provide a combined total of 80,000 sq ft of modern office space.
