  • Local medical tech firm axial3D has been shortlisted for the Best use of Data Science/AI for Health & Wellbeing award at the upcoming annual DatSci and AI Awards.

Now in its fourth year, the annual DatSci and AI awards highlight the best use of data science an AI technologies across the whole of Europe, focusing on major advances in the field and tech innovations in the data science sector. Belfast-based firm axial3D has been nominated in the category of "Best use of Data Science/AI for Health and Wellbeing" for its pioneering use of AI in 3D visualisation technology.

The company uses AI to process data from medical scans into 3D models suitable for 3D printing, which are then printed into finished 3D models on demand for use in pre-operative surgical planning. The firm recently presented a fascinating talk at NI Dev Conf delving into the process of extracting 3D features from scan data and images, and highlighting efforts to speed up the manual process using AI classifiers.

3D printed models from axial3D's process have been used to successfully plan complex procedures and reduce the risk to patients by visualising things such as complex bone breaks and tumours in 3D. The DatSci and AI awards will take place on September 5th 2019 in a full-day event hosted in Dublin. The award ceremony is expected to see over 450 attendees from over 48 countries, with awards given out to individuals and teams working in the Data Science Ecosystem across Europe.
