  • Planning permission has been recommended for a £14m 100-bed luxury hotel and spa in Rostrevor overlooking Carlingford Lough.

A new four-star luxury hotel and spa at the foot of the Mourne mountains has been given recommendation for planning permission. The Seven Hills Hotel and Spa was originally proposed by developer Miceal Tinnelly back in 2017, and aimed to turn a 35-acre space around the Greenpark Road into a 100-bed hotel overlooking Carlingford Lough.

The plans faced objection by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, who had previously approved the developer for a smaller 50-bed resort back in 2011 that ultimately didn't go ahead. Miceal re-applied with new information and this year the council has agreed to recommend planning approval for the large 100-bed resort. Final approval is expected to be granted by a planning committee in March.

The areas around Carlingford Lough have become extremely popular tourist and event destinations and boast some of the most attractive scenery in the country. The new hotel will be within the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and near the listed Rostrevor House building, so the council have had to be careful to ensure new buildings don't disturb the area's heritage and views.
