Belfast Harbour to get world's largest hydraulic crane

  • Belfast Harbour has ordered a new £3m hydraulic crane that is reportedly the largest in the world.

Over 23 million tonnes of cargo passes through Belfast Harbour each year, and that number seems to be on the rise with the harbour recently reporting a 3% increase in cargo handled and a 5.6% increase in operating profit. Some of that profit is now being used to enhance the harbour's operating capability with the installation of a new £3m hydraulic crane.

The Mantsinen 300M crane is reported to be the largest hydraulic crane in the world, standing at over 40m tall and with a total weight of 370 tonnes. It will be the largest crane of its kind in operation in any port in the UK or Ireland when it's delivered from Finland in the Spring and will allow the harbour to rapidly discarge up to 1,000 tonnes per hour of bulk cargo such as animal feed.

Belfast Harbour operations director Trevor Anderson was very positive about the new equipment: "The Harbour is the first business in the UK and Ireland to invest in what is the largest crane of its kind in the world. The extra capacity, longer reach and overall versatility will significantly enhance our cargo-handling portfolio. It will also improve vessel turnaround times for customers importing and exporting from the Harbour."
