Leading social enterprise, East Belfast Enterprise, has officially been recognised as a Living Wage Employer, reinforcing its commitment to fairness, dignity, and wellbeing in the workplace.
This accreditation from the Living Wage Foundation, ensures that all EBE staff, and third-party contracted staff who work regularly with the organisation, now receive at least the Real Living Wage, currently £12.60 across the UK. This rate is independently calculated based on the actual cost of living, not just the government minimum. It is updated annually by the Living Wage Foundation and supported by thousands of employers who believe a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.
Jonathan McAlpin, Chief Executive of East Belfast Enterprise, described the accreditation as both a proud achievement and a natural progression for the organisation. He said: “This accreditation as a Living Wage Employer isn’t just about a payslip but in fact it is about respect and putting people at the heart of everything we achieve. At East Belfast Enterprise, we value our people deeply and encourage them to thrive professionally and personally. Paying the Real Living Wage is a practical and powerful way to show our commitment to our team. When an organisation pays staff fairly, I believe it improves staff morale, retention and motivation. It uplifts families, strengthens businesses, and contributes to a healthier and more resilient community.”
East Belfast Enterprise has long been regarded as a key player in supporting local businesses, start-ups, and entrepreneurs throughout the area. From providing affordable office space and training to offering expert business mentoring and support, the organisation plays a vital role in fostering economic development and innovation in East Belfast. The decision to gain Living Wage Employer status aligns seamlessly with its broader mission to create inclusive, supportive environments where individuals and enterprises can flourish.
Looking ahead, East Belfast Enterprise hopes that its decision will inspire other organisations, within the voluntary sector and beyond, to consider Living Wage accreditation.
Jonathan McAlpin added: “We hope our accreditation sends a clear message to our community and peers that fair pay matters. We encourage other employers to consider the long-term benefits of paying the Real Living Wage.”
East Belfast Enterprise exists to support entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses. By achieving Living Wage accreditation, East Belfast Enterprise joins over 14,000 employers across the UK that are committed to putting people first.
