BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT has just hosted an AR event with pupils from Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle
Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle has just ran the “Geography, where ITs at” event, which saw students studying A level and GCSE Geography and Digital Technology take part in two fascinating parallel workshops linking the subjects. The event was funded and organised by the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, Northern Ireland Branch.
Guest speaker, Dr Nick Whitelegg from Solent University in Southampton, gave students an amazing experience of augmented reality (AR) in which Nick talked students through the technology and practical applications of AR before giving students an outdoor demonstration of his own augmented reality app for hill walkers, called HIKAR.
The second session introduced students to the world of ‘Missing Maps’ with Conor Graham and Emma Delaney of the Queen’s University Geography Department and Stephen Boyd of Ordnance Survey NI providing a demonstration on how the ‘Missing Maps’ application is helping charities in developing countries.
Shimna Integrated College Teachers, Irene Mathieu, Head of Maths and Computing, and Joanne Anderson, Head of Geography were both thrilled at how the experience had broadened students’ horizons, and given them real insight into how computer apps are developed and the relevance of geography as a dynamic career option.
