A Landmark Degree for the North West and Beyond: Preparing Graduates to Shape the Future of Research and Industry

  • Ulster University's School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems has launched a bold new BSc (Hons) in Computing with Applied Mathematics, now open through Clearing for September 2025 entry. This is a landmark development, not only for Derry~Londonderry and the wider North West, but for the future of education in mathematics, computing, and AI across the island of Ireland.

Designed at the intersection of two foundational disciplines, the degree equips students with the rigorous mathematical skills and computational fluency required in today’s, and tomorrow’s, data-driven world. Its contemporary and future-focused curriculum prepares students not only for today’s job markets but for emerging fields that will shape the future of humanity, such as quantum computing, computational biology, and responsible AI systems. These are areas that are still evolving yet already demand graduates with both mathematical insight and computing expertise.

Graduates of this programme will be well positioned to pursue a wide variety of rewarding careers across some of the most dynamic sectors of the modern economy. In the data and AI space, roles such as data scientist, machine learning engineer, and AI researcher draw heavily on the blend of mathematical reasoning and coding that this degree offers. Similarly, in software and systems development, graduates may progress into roles as developers, cloud specialists, or systems engineers, particularly in contexts where algorithmic thinking and modelling are essential. The degree also opens pathways into quantitative finance, simulation engineering, and scientific computing, while serving as a strong launchpad for postgraduate study or emerging sectors like ethical AI or quantum technologies. The common thread across all these opportunities is that this course equips graduates with a competitive edge, combining analytical rigour, programming ability, and applied problem-solving to thrive in fields where mathematics and computing intersect to shape the technologies of tomorrow.

The new degree also aligns strongly with Ulster University’s mission to promote campus balance and regional development. The recent graduation of the first cohort from Ulster’s Graduate Entry Medical School in Derry~Londonderry demonstrates a clear institutional commitment to delivering world-class, high-impact disciplines in the North West. The introduction of Computing with Applied Mathematics builds on this foundation, reaffirming the University's ambition to position Derry~Londonderry as a hub for academic excellence in both the applied sciences and technological innovation.

Indeed, with this new offering in mathematics and computing, Ulster signals that the ancient twin pillars of higher education, medicine and mathematics, are being renewed and reimagined in Derry~Londonderry. This is not only a commitment to disciplinary

excellence, but a declaration of intent about the kind of future the University seeks to help shape, locally and globally.
