Record-breaking year for Queen’s as research results reach an all-time high

  • The latest research performance results from Queen’s University Belfast indicate 2023-24 was a record-breaking year.

    The University’s research awards have increased year-on-year for the past five years and are currently valued at over £124M, with total industry funds increasing to over £34M.

    Researchers at Queen’s work endlessly to make a global impact through excellence in research and innovation, helping to shape a better world.

    Currently, the University is ranked 117th in the world for Research Quality by Times Higher World University Rankings 2025.

    Professor Archie Clements, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for Research and Enterprise at Queen’s commented: “Queen’s certainly has a proud history of conducting innovative, impactful and world-leading research that has positively influenced people from across the globe.

    “I recognise that 2023-24 was another extremely successful year for high-quality research performance, our highest ever on record, and I would like to congratulate everyone who has dedicated their time to achieving these outstanding results.

    “As a university, our ambition for 2030 is to further enhance our influence by strengthening our research position and working with industry to broaden our translational impact and innovation. I have no doubt that we will continue to deliver high-quality, world-leading research.”

    The University’s research disciplines span from English to Engineering, Business, Law, Creative Arts, Architecture, Food Science, Physics, Nursing and more.

    Professor Archie Clements adds: “Not only does Queen’s research have a leading global influence, but it is also crucial at a local level, from positively impacting the Northern Ireland economy to playing a vital role in shaping policy and resulting in change.

    “Research contributes to our primary mission of teaching and is vital to help better support and guide our students, and we believe they can only benefit from studying in an environment rich with research and discovery.”
