Professor Chris Johnson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engineering and Physical Sciences at Queen’s University, has today been announced as the UK Government’s Chief Scientist in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
Professor Johnson has an extensive and pioneering research history, working on the safety, security and resilience of critical infrastructure.
Although stepping back from his role as Pro-Vice Chancellor, he will remain with the University on a part-time basis to continue contributing to its health and safety work and maintain links with key businesses in the community.

Reflecting on his transition to the new role, Professor Johnson says:
“I am really excited to be taking up a new role in Westminster but also to be able to retain my links to Queen’s and to Northern Ireland. It’s my firm intention to promote the economic and social wellbeing of this region as I work with colleagues to support and guide UK policy in research, innovation and digital infrastructure.”Speaking of the new appointment, Queen’s Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer stated he was “delighted for Chris having been offered such a prestigious position.
“Over the years, his work has delivered substantial impact not only on our University, but in the broader landscape of the health and safety of infrastructure across Northern Ireland, the UK and beyond.
“I have no doubt that he will continue such positive impact at Whitehall and am equally pleased that he will be continuing his relationship with Queen’s. Our work will be all the better for his continued commitment.”
